Based in Guam, Olivia Newman creates acrylic paintings of landscapes of scenes from all across Guam.

Olivia Newman

Her parents didn't support her passion for fine arts, so she studied dentistry in college. However, now she works as a full-time artist and part-time as a dental auxiliary. After organizing her setup and cleaning her brushes, she composes striking paintings that closely depict Guam’s beauty. Despite not having her initially parents’ support, she has remained passionate about art and feels a deep sense of satisfaction whenever she completes a good piece.

Nowadays, she has not only expanded the tools she uses, but her artwork has also evolved to incorporate many aspects of her life. From sceneries and flowers to portraits and other local artists, she finds inspiration from all across Guam. These influence her vision to bring the beautiful island to life to share with anyone. By playing with textures and fluid art, she exhibits her love and compassion for the island through her artwork.

Describe what you do.

As of now, I’m a full-time artist and working part-time as a dental auxiliary.

How would you define art?

Art is an expression of one’s creativity.

Why did you choose your art form?

I don’t have a particular form because I’m trying all types of mediums. Acrylic is just my favorite because it’s easy to manipulate.

How did your high school/college years affect the work you make today?

As a high school student, I have no source to support my passion. Just practice sketching using my pencils and crayons. My parents didn’t approve fine arts so I followed my best friend in taking dentistry.

Who do you idolize?

Local artists: Arman Germar, Rolly Cepeda, Edong Elenzano, Ric Castro, and Yeon Sook Park. I like Van Gough’s texture art of course.

Where do you get your inspiration?

Guam scenery, tropical flowers, and portrait of people

What do you do when you're stuck on an artwork or lacking motivation or inspiration?

Go out to the beach and meditate.

What do you like incorporating most into your art?

Something that involves Guam.

What is something that you add to your art as like your signature?

Texture and unique fluid art.

Take us through your process for making art.

Acrylic painting: although I make a lot of mess, I still want to make sure that everything is organized and clean before I start.

What do you struggle with the most when making art?

Detailing the minute ones.

What role do artists have in society?

Expression of one’s creativity.

What characteristics do you think all artists share?

They have their own world when doing their own masterpiece.

What’s your favorite place in Guam?

Faifai Beach and Pagat Cliff

How has your artwork evolved over time?

Getting better. Exposure to exhibits and supporting other artists through their exhibits helps me grow, it inspires me to do more.

Why did you choose to become an artist?

It’s been my passion and makes me feel good after finishing a good piece.

Do you have any tips for aspiring artists?

Keep practicing. Even if you’re good at it.. practice keeps you going.
