She knew she was an artist from her childhood, and she chose to attend art school in hopes of creating practical art that effectively communicates and embraces society. When making her artwork, she starts by drawing inspiration from diverse and unexplored territories, usually in nature, and collecting them all in one place. Using this collection, she determines her design and size, working towards softening the callousness of her work and adding floral designs that create a delicate and harmonizing effect that accentuates the captivating and dream-like quality of her medium.

Describe what you do.

I specialize in surrealistic art, employing oil on wood as my preferred medium. Drawing inspiration from fashion, nature, and dreamlike concepts, my creations showcase a unique blend of these influences. In addition to my artistic pursuits, I offer bespoke fashion designs for clients. On regular days, I make use of my creativity as a visual merchandiser for a prestigious luxury brand.

How would you define art?

Art, to me, serves as a profound outlet for emotional expression, fostering contemplation and prompting us to explore life's unconventional, eerie, and often overlooked facets of perception.

Why did you choose your art form?

I chose oil and graphite on wood as my preferred medium because, among various styles I've explored, this combination consistently produces the effects I envision. The blend brings a captivating and dreamlike quality, with the transparency allowing the wood grain to be visible, enhancing the overall visual impact.

How has your ethnicity/race affected the type of art you make?

My Filipino heritage has profoundly influenced my art, drawing inspiration from the rich tradition of Filipino artists. Learning about their journeys in school has fueled my aspirations to create art worthy of global recognition. It's bittersweet that many Filipino artists work overseas, often for renowned companies, signaling a sense of accomplishment. In my work, I aim to spark curiosity without explicit explanations, letting viewers engage with the pieces on a personal level.

How did your high school/college years affect the work you make today?

My high school and college years played a crucial role in shaping my current artistic pursuits. Art school exposed me to a diverse range of skills, encouraging exploration to discover strengths. While I possess a broad skill set, it became evident that my passion lies in fashion design. The experience helped me refine my focus, and today, I am dedicated to honing my skills in this particular specific field.

Who do you idolize?

My artistic admiration extends to creators in various fields, but I hold particular reverence for artists like James Jean and Audrey Kawasaki. Their work has been a significant source of inspiration, influencing my own artistic journey.

Where do you get your inspiration?

My inspiration primarily stems from nature; I find value in emulating and drawing from its essence. It can strike unexpectedly and in various forms, therefore I jot down ideas in a small notebook or planner that I always carry with me. This way, I capture those moments of inspiration as they occur.

What do you do when you're stuck on an artwork or lacking motivation or inspiration?

When faced with a lack of motivation or inspiration, I take a break to refresh my perspective. Seeking feedback or actively searching for additional inspiration helps reignite my creativity. As a perfectionist, I counter this tendency by ensuring my vision is clear before starting an artwork. Thorough preparation, drafting, and research become valuable tools to cope with challenges.

What do you like incorporating most into your art?

My primary muse is women, and I enjoy infusing my art with a unique and unconventional fashion sense, often taking inspiration from nature. I delve into the eerie by seamlessly blending details from the natural world in unexpected ways, constructing a distinctive and captivating realm within my artwork.

What is something that you add to your art as like your signature?

To imbue a sense of balance and soften the perceived callousness in my work, I often incorporate intricate floral details as a signature touch. This not only adds a distinctive element but also brings a delicate and harmonizing aspect to the overall expression of my art.

Take us through your process for making art.

My artistic process begins with extensive research, drawing inspiration from unfamiliar realms. I delve into discovery, exploring new concepts and ideas. The next step involves creating an inspiration board, compiling elements that resonate with my vision. This board serves as a guide for crafting different drafts, ultimately leading to the decision on the size and final execution of the artwork.

What do you struggle with the most when making art?

My primary challenge is when the artwork doesn't manifest as intended, especially during the creation of gradients and contrast in my oil-on-wood medium. Material nuances become critical; ensuring they haven't dried out and using the right tools can significantly impact the desired effect. Investing in high-quality oils and brushes is essential for me, as they play a crucial role in achieving the desired outcome in my artwork.

What role do artists have in society?

Artists play a vital role in inspiring society. The creative process brings innovation and unique perspectives that can enhance people's lives. Creative individuals, unconfined by norms, often think outside the box, contributing to a diverse and enriched cultural landscape.

What characteristics do you think all artists share?

All artists share a common thread of being hardworking and mind-blowing individuals. Their dedication to their craft, coupled with the ability to create thought-provoking and impactful work, sets them apart as dynamic contributors to the artistic landscape.

What’s your favorite place in Guam?

My favorite place in Guam is the beach. The beauty of the coastline, especially when snorkeling by the reef, allows me to study the underwater world and draw inspiration from its diverse and fascinating elements.

How has your artwork evolved over time?

Over time, my artwork has transformed from a childlike style to a more mature expression, mirroring a personal evolution. The evolution reflects not only artistic development but also a deeper exploration of themes, techniques, and a heightened sense of personal expression.

Why did you choose to become an artist?

Being inherently artistic, I chose to enhance my skills by attending art school. Opting for advertising arts, I aimed to create practical and effective art that communicates seamlessly and is embraced by society. I may have ended up in a different field but this principle continues to guide my daily work.

Is your art geared towards a specific audience?

My art isn't geared toward a specific audience; I prioritize personal satisfaction in my creative process. While client-specific projects consider their requests, my primary focus is to meet, if not exceed, their expectations. Ultimately, my art is an authentic expression that reflects my vision and creative fulfillment.

Do you have any tips for aspiring artists?

Regardless of the path ahead, keep art an integral part of your life. Even if pursued on the side, it becomes a constant companion. Embrace variety; experiment with different places, foods, and cultures. Fearlessly try new things, as experience remains the most profound teacher on your artistic journey.
