032: Andrew Gulac

Andrew Gulac, also known as Androo671, is a traditional and digital illustrator based in Guam. His work draws inspiration from a diverse range of sources, including comics, movies, martial arts, nature, travel, and everyday life experiences.

Andrew Gulac

Gulac's artistic journey began naturally. His high school and college years were crucial in developing his visual art skills, serving as a scaffold for his current work. His works are vibrant and dynamic, characterized by bold lines and fun colors, often incorporating elements like teeth and organic material. He believes art to be an imitation of life, drawing on this timeless concept to shape his creations. Inspired by a wide array of idols, including Jim Lee, Todd McFarlane, Akira Toriyama, Warhol, Basquiat, Van Gogh, Caravaggio, Matisse, Francis Bacon, and Hayao Miyazaki, Gulac’s style is a blend of many artistic traditions and modern pop culture.

Andrew Gulac

Gulac discovers creativity in the daily rhythms of island life and the vibrant world of comics. He values the simplicity and authenticity of his environment, which is a constant source of new ideas. However, like many artists, he sometimes faces creative blocks. His solution is to take breaks, go for hikes—something he emphasizes—and return to his work with a fresh perspective.

Andrew Gulac

Gulac’s creative process is a mix of structured and spontaneous elements. He describes it humorously as involving coffee, movie references, random thoughts, a series of sketches, and a fair share of failures before reaching a satisfactory outcome. His struggle with drawing hands is a testament to the challenges every artist faces, but it also highlights his dedication to improving his craft.

Andrew Gulac

Gulac does not target a specific audience with his art. Instead, he creates for the love of the process, encouraging aspiring artists to follow the simple yet powerful advice of "Just do it." He views artists as integral to society, contributing significantly to various aspects of daily life, from the food we eat to the entertainment we enjoy. For Gulac, being an artist feels natural, and his favorite place to find inspiration remains his hometown in the southern part of Guam. His work continues to evolve, as demonstrated by his portfolio, reflecting his unique journey and the diverse influences that shape his artistic vision.
